What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is a program built around a language model — often one of OpenAI’s — that is given an objective, a set of tools and limits, and left to work. It plans steps, calls the tools, reads the results, iterates and finishes, then reports. It runs on a schedule or in response to events, not only when someone types, and its outputs are actions in systems: records updated, emails sent, calls made, posts published.
The model is the same kind of thing in both cases. What makes the agent different is the harness around the model: tools, memory of the task, a definition of done, and rules about what it may do alone.
