What is Claude?
Claude is two things that share a name. And it is the family of models underneath, available to developers through Anthropic’s API, which is what businesses use when they build their own software on Claude.

What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is a program built around a language model that is given an objective, tools and limits, then left to work: plan, act, read the result, iterate, finish, report. It runs on a schedule or in response to events. Its outputs are changes in the world — a list built, a sequence sent, a meeting booked, a record reconciled — rather than replies in a chat.
The model does the reasoning; the agent framework provides the tools, the memory of the task, the definition of done and the rules about what needs a person. Claude can be the model inside; it is not itself the agent.
